Male Gaze Music Video Analysis

Within the first 10 seconds we see Robin Thicke and Emily Ratajkowski. We are presented with a close up of their lower body and then the camera moves upwards to a close up of their face. They appear to be lying in bed together and we associate this with relationships as she also appears to be wearing no clothes which may be seen as a sexual thing. The fact that Robin Thicke is wearing clothes and Emily is not, this may show his dominance in the situation so that the man has the power.

From this 10 second clip we see various women dressed in little clothing and what they are wearing is very tight and reveals their curves. This is appealing to the Male Gaze because of the way they are dressed to please men. This may be seen as degrading as they are dressed this way to look attractive for men. Also they are seen as support acts, and not the main people, this also can be seen as degrading as it is the men who are singing and in the camera the majority of the time and the women are there to appeal to the Male Gaze.

In this clip I believe that it is degrading for women. It shows how the men are in control in this video as the women is sitting on the chair and the man looks in control as he is walking around her. He doesn't seem to have much respect for the women in the chair. This can appeal to the Male Gaze as the people watching will see how it is empowering the man.

Ex Machina - Official Trailer (2015) [HD]

Representation and textual analysis

7 Areas of representation:

  1. Gender
  2. Age
  3. Sexuality
  4. Ethnicity
  5. Class and Status
  6. Disability
  7. Regional identity

UK Tribes- Self Representation

  • Use UK Tribes to find the group or groups (there can be crossover) that you think you belong to. Why do you belong to this group(s)?
I consider myself to be in the group 'Stylers' and maybe some 'Trackies' or 'Sports Junkies'. I believe i belong to this as I like to follow certain styles (mostly with clothing). I like to buy the popular clothing brands but i do not buy clothes based on what other people wear, I just like having the brands. I think I could be part of Trackies as I am very chilled out and like to just relax with my friends and sometimes it takes a bit to get me motivated to do something. Sports Junkies as well as I am very into Football, although i don't play football anymore, I love to watch it and as I have a season ticket at Leicester City and go on as many away matches as possible.

  • What media figures (actors, musicians, sportspeople, celebrities) do you consider similar to you. In what way are they similar to you/ are you similar to them?
I aspire to be involved in football in some way, not playing it but maybe involved in the media side of the game. I aspire to be maybe a presenter of a game as they get to watch all the games and analyse it which interests me a lot.
  • Do you consciously 'model' (copy modes of dress, style yourself, act like) yourself on any of these media figures? Why is that?
I do not specifically model myself to be like anyone, but if i like something they do or wear then it may encourage me to do it or buy it.  I like to keep up with the trends but not in a way that i would change myself, but some people can be used as templates for me.

The Man, the Women and the Man 2

The Man

The man looks like a homeless man, we can tell this because of the clothes he is wearing. People will judge him as a homeless man because of the clothes he is wearing and the fact he looks like he is living on the streets. Also the way he has a cigarette in his mouth so he looks dirty. His parents may have abandoned him or he lost his job for some reason and couldn't afford a place to live so now lives on the streets.

The Women
The women looks like a crazy women who seems to dress like she is younger than she is. But also it seems like she enjoys her shopping and also her fashion. We can tell this because of the way she is dressed and the bag she is holding shows how she likes her fashion. Although this is how we see her she is in fact she is a well known 60's actress called Julie Christie but she no longer does much acting.

The Man 2
This man looks like a very confident and smart man, we can tell by the way he is dressed and is walking. His clothes are also matching so it shows how he is very fashionable. We can see from this that he is maybe a fashion designer or has a job to do with clothes. Or it could mean he is very wealthy so he can afford matching suits and nice clothes. He is in fact Christian Louboutin, a shoe designer and is a extremely successful man.
